Santander and Webster Bank: FAQs

On August 20th, 2026, Santander Group completed its acquisition by merging Webster Bank into Santander Bank, N.A. — creating one of the largest retail and commercial banks in the United States by assets. Webster Bank is now a division of Santander Bank, N.A. As we work toward a seamless integration of our companies in the coming months, we’re committed to staying close to our customers and maintaining our relentless dedication to high levels of service, every step of the way.

In the future, our vision of building a stronger bank, together, will ultimately mean access to a broader footprint of retail bank branches, enhanced digital and mobile banking capabilities, and a wider range of products — all building on a foundation of local, relationship-based service, now enhanced by the scale and stability of one of the world’s largest banking groups.

For more information, please read our press release here.

No. You can keep banking with us as you do today, with full confidence. Your accounts, services, and points of contact at Santander and/or its Openbank division will continue to be the same (this includes your access to both Online and Mobile Banking at Santander and the Openbank App). Over time, as we bring Santander and Webster Bank together, you’ll have access to more locations, more capabilities, and a broader range of products to support your financial needs.

When we do add new capabilities or services, we’ll reach out to you with more information so that you know what to expect and how to take advantage of them.

Absolutely. All existing locations of Santander will remain open, and if there are any location updates in the future we'll provide advance notice to customers who may be impacted.

NOTE: Santander customers can now use Webster Bank ATMs for cash withdrawals and account inquiries — without any fees. (The ability to use Webster Bank ATMs for deposits for Santander accounts will follow in the coming months. Please be aware that at this time, Webster Bank branches cannot help you with accounts based at Santander.)

Not yet. While that’s a part of our long-term plan, for now Santander customers should continue to visit only Santander branches for assistance with Santander accounts. You can also continue to use the Santander Mobile App and Online Banking services.

In the short term, very little will change for Santander and Openbank customers. You can continue banking with us as you do today, and your accounts and related information will not change.

Starting on August 20th, 2026, Santander customers will be able to use both Santander and Webster Bank ATMs within the United States for cash withdrawals and balance inquiries — without any fees. Your ability to make deposits at Webster Bank ATMs will follow in the future.

If we make any additional updates in the future, we’ll let you know in advance to ensure that you’re fully prepared to take advantage.

In the coming months, the vast majority of your everyday banking experience with Santander and Openbank will remain unchanged. This includes:

  • All currently available Santander and Openbank products and services.
  • Your Santander and/or Openbank account numbers, routing number, checks, and cards. There will also be no changes to your sign-in information for banking online or on the app.
  • Your ability to sign in and use affiliated digital services and platforms (e.g. BillPay, Zelle, etc.).
  • Any call centers or mailing centers you currently use.
  • Standard timeframes for funds availability.

If and when we do make any updates — including the introduction of new banking products and services — we'll reach out to you in advance to let you know.

Yes. Following the merger, FDIC coverage continues without interruption. Under a special FDIC rule for bank mergers, deposits held as of August 20th, 2026 at Webster (including BrioDirect and HSAs at HSA Bank), and deposits held at Santander (including Openbank), are insured separately for six months, or in case of certificates of deposit (CDs), the earliest maturity date after the six-month period. After the applicable grace periods, all deposits you hold at the combined bank will be aggregated for FDIC insurance purposes and subject to standard coverage limits.
